Tuition Fee Refund Policy for students from outside the EU or EEA
This page explains when a tuition fee may be refunded in full or in part. All refunds are processed based on a written application and the required supporting documents.
When is the tuition fee refunded in full?
The tuition fee will be refunded in full if the education programme is cancelled for reasons attributable to TAKK, the student selection is cancelled by TAKK, or the student cannot be admitted for reasons attributable to TAKK.
The tuition fee will also be refunded in full if the student receives a negative decision from the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) on their first residence permit application for studies. A copy of the decision must be attached to the application.
A full refund may also be granted on a case-by-case basis if, before the studies begin, the student experiences a serious illness, serious accident or another exceptional and documented personal circumstance. The application must include reliable supporting documents, such as a medical certificate or an official authority document.
When is the tuition fee partially refunded?
If a student cancels based on their decision, their study place after confirming it by paying the tuition fee but before the studies begin, 80% of the tuition fee will be refunded. TAKK will retain a 20% cancellation fee to cover administrative costs.
A partial refund requires that the student provides documentation showing that the residence permit application has been withdrawn or that the Migri permit process has been cancelled.
If the studies have already started and the student must discontinue them due to a serious illness, serious accident or another exceptional and documented personal circumstance, TAKK may assess a partial refund on a case-by-case basis. The assessment takes into account, for example, the progress of the studies, the teaching and guidance already provided, and the costs already incurred in organising the education.
The tuition fee may also be credited if the student transfers to another study programme within TAKK. A credit may be granted only if the transfer is based on a clear and documented reason assessed by TAKK, the student is admitted to the new study programme, and the credit is allocated to the remaining study period. If the student transfers to another educational institution, the tuition fee will not be refunded.
When is the tuition fee not refunded?
The tuition fee will not be refunded if the student discontinues their studies without an acceptable and documented reason, loses their study right due to their own actions, does not progress as required, fails to apply for a residence permit, does not arrive in Finland on time for reasons attributable to themselves, transfers to another educational institution, or considers the education, field of study or living in Finland unsuitable for themselves.
Failure to secure accommodation or a work-based learning placement is not a valid reason for a refund. However, TAKK may, on a case-by-case basis, consider extending the student's study right or study completion time to avoid unnecessary interruption to completing the qualification.
How to apply for a refund
Refunds must be requested in writing. The application must include all documents needed to process the matter, such as a Migri decision, proof that the residence permit application has been withdrawn, a medical certificate or other reliable supporting evidence.
The application will be processed once all required documents have been submitted to TAKK. Any banking or transfer fees may be deducted from the refunded amount. The refund will be paid using the same payment method as the original payment.
